Birmingham, AL-The Gulf South Conference is proud to announce its All-GSC Men's Basketball honors for the 2009-10 season.
Leading the way on the All-GSC squads are three returning First Teamers and one Second Team returnee. Arkansas Tech provided three First Team members, while North Alabama and Valdosta State followed with two First Teamers.
Alabama-Huntsville added three Second Team honorees, followed by a pair by Christian Brothers. Delta State placed one on the First Team and Second Team.
ATU LEADS THE WAY IN THE WEST
Arkansas Tech provided the West Division Player and Coach of the Year. Guard Brandon Friedel became first-ever ATU player to be named GSC West Division Player of the Year. Friedel was also the first guard to claim the accolade since 2002-03. The senior wrapped up the regular season ranked eighth in the league in scoring (15.1), fourth in three-point percentage (.444-84-189) and 10th in field goal percentage (.449-136-303).
Wonder Boys' Head Coach Mark Downey collected his first-ever West Division Coach of the Year laurel after leading the squad to its first-ever Division Title and a No. 1 national and regional ranking. Arkansas Tech also recorded its best start ever at 25-0.
Christian Brothers forward Michael Drake continued the Buccaneers' success in the West Division Freshman of the Year voting, becoming the fifth CBU newcomer to claim honors in six seasons. Drake played 23 games for CBU, starting 15, and averaging 9.0 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.
UAH, VSU HEADLINE EAST HONORS
Valdosta State made history in the East Division honors when forward Tyrone Curnell became the school's first-ever outright East Division Player of the Year honoree. Curnell is just the second Blazer to take the award, following Shun Stargell who shared the award in 1994-95. The unanimous selection is a five time GSC Player of the Week honoree who wrapped up the regular season third in the GSC in scoring (18.2), steals (1.93) and field goal percentage (.519-163-314) and fourth in rebounds (8.4).
For the second consecutive season, Alabama-Huntsville provided the East Division Freshman of the Year, post player Zane Campbell. Campbell enters the post-season ranked 10th in the Conference in blocks (1.04) and is averaging a team-high 11.4 points per game.
The East Division Coach of the Year award was shared for just the second time ever when UAH's Lennie Acuff and VSU's Mike Helfer tied in the voting. Acuff was also involved in the first tie which occurred in the 2004-05 campaign.
Acuff's honor moved him into second-place all-time in GSC history, claiming his fourth career award. He guided the Chargers to a share of the Division crown and the No. 1 GSC Tournament seed. Acuff was also given the honor in 1999, 2003 and 2005 and is just one award behind all-time leader, Delta State legend Steve Rives.
Helfer notches his second consecutive accolade after leading the Blazers to a share of the East Division Crown. The Blazers reeled off 15 straight victories and surpassed the 20-win mark for the second season.
THREE RETURN TO ALL-GSC FIRST TEAM
Valdosta State Tyrone Curnell, West Alabama forward Jason Swanson and Delta State point guard Chad Akins return from last year's All-GSC First Team. VSU guard Ricardo Lewis makes the jump from the 2009 Second Team.
Harding forward Kevin Brown and West Georgia forward John Pringle return to the All-GSC Second Team. Alabama-Huntsville forward Cody Jones collected First Team laurels last year.
