OPENING ROUND—WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5
Game A—W5 Arkansas Tech (17-10, 8-6) vs. E4 Alabama-Huntsville (13-14, 6-6)—5:30 p.m.
Alabama-Huntsville enters the GSC Tournament as a No. 4 seed for the second straight season, facing Arkansas Tech which makes just its second overall appearance (first since 2000). UAH is 2-0 all-time versus ATU, taking a pair from the Wonder Boys in the 2001-02 regular season.
Alabama-Huntsville makes its eighth Tournament trip, fourth in a row. The Chargers have a 4-7 record, advancing to the 2003 Championship Game and the 2006 Semi-Finals. UAH is 4-1 versus West Division foes this year and is 7-6 against the Tournament field.
Arkansas Tech seeks to make the most of its first post-season trip since 2000. The Wonder Boys' first and only appearance was a short one, falling to West Florida in the First Round. In fact, this year's berth marks ATU's first-ever trip to a GSC Tournament held on neutral ground (the 2000 Tournament was held at Delta State).
KEY PLAYERS: Alabama-Huntsville guard Tyler Dunaway is first in the GSC in three-point field goal percentage (.453—68-150), while guard Kael Coleman is second in free throw percentage (.845--79-91) and 10th in assists (3.56). Game B—E5 Montevallo (12-15, 5-7) vs. W4 Arkansas-Monticello (16-11, 8-6)—7:30 p.m.
Defending GSC Champion Montevallo finds itself in an unfamiliar position after entering the GSC Tournament the past three seasons as the East's top seed. Arkansas-Monticello returns to the post-season after a year's absence. The squads have met in the GSC Tournament once before with UM ousting the Boll Weevils in the 2006 Semi-Finals, 80-71. The Falcons are 9-1 all-time versus UAM with the lone loss coming in the 1999-2000 season.
Montevallo makes its sixth post-season appearance, while going 11-2. The Falcons have advanced to four Finals, taking home the trophy in 2004, 2005 and 2006. UM is 3-0 versus West foes this season and is 3-6 versus the Tournament field.
Arkansas-Monticello returns to the GSC Tournament after a year's hiatus. UAM has advanced to four previous tournaments, going 3-4 led by three Semi-Finals showings (2001, 2005 and 2006).
KEY PLAYERS: Arkansas-Monticello forward Raymond Wright is tied for second in the league in rebounds (9.6) and also ranks sixth in field goal percentage (.550--116-211) and ninth in scoring (16.1). Guard Deron Brown is ninth in assists (3.67) and Derek Easter is 10th in blocks (1.11). Montevallo guard Terrill Humphrey is fifth in scoring (18.0) and seventh in three-point percentage (.407--92-226). Forward Anthony Brown is eighth in rebounding (7.1).
QUARTER-FINALS—FRIDAY, MARCH 7
Game C—Arkansas Tech/Alabama-Huntsville winner vs. W1 Harding (16-11, 10-4)—12:30 p.m.
West Division Champion and No. 1 seed Harding faces the winner of Game A, Alabama-Huntsville or Arkansas Tech.
HU claimed its first-ever West Division Crown after finishing in a three-way tie for tops in the standings. The Bisons advanced to their sixth GSC Tournament, second consecutive. They are 3-5 in the post-season, moving to the Semi-Finals in 1999 and 2007. Harding is 3-1 versus the East Division this season and 5-7 versus the Tournament field. HU is tied all-time with UAH splitting a pair with Chargers earlier this season. The Bisons trail ATU all-time, 51-50, dropping a pair of contests to the Wonder Boys during the regular season.
KEY PLAYERS: Harding forward Matt Hall is the defending West Division Player of the Year and currently leads the Conference in scoring (20.1). Hall is also fourth in three-point percentage (.419--44-105) eighth in free throw percentage (.762—160-210). Game D—E2 Valdosta State (17-10, 8-4) vs. W3 Ouachita Baptist (19-8, 10-4)—2:45 p.m.
Valdosta State and Ouachita Baptist clash for the first time ever with each team seeking to put the brakes on a two-game in GSC Tournament action.
VSU enters as the No. 2 East seed for the second year in a row and seeks to rebound from a buzzer-beater loss in last year's Quarter-Finals. VSU makes its fifth consecutive post-season trip, 14th overall. The Blazers are 7-13 in league Tournament action, advancing to the Finals in 1983 and 2002. They will be facing their first West Division foe this season and are 4-4 versus the rest of the field.
Ouachita Baptist returns to the Tournament for the fifth time in six years. The Tigers are playing as the No. 3 West seed for the first time. A victory would push OBU into the Semi-Finals for the first time ever and would move them to 2-4 in Tournament play. Ouachita Baptist seeks its first win over an East opponent this season, going 0-1, and is 5-4 versus the rest of the field.
KEY PLAYERS: Valdosta State forward Devario Hudson is tied for second in the Conference in rebounding (9.6) and is also third in blocks (1.93) and eighth in scoring (16.3). Guard Ricky Coleman is sixth in scoring (17.7), while guard Stephan Walton is seventh in assists (3.73). Ouachita Baptist forward Ed Keyes is second in blocks (2.00) and seventh in rebounding (7.5). Forward Justin Delamar is third in field goal percentage (.569--87-153) and eighth in blocks (1.19).
Game E—Montevallo/Arkansas-Monticello winner vs. E1 North Alabama (23-7, 10-2)—5:30 p.m.
North Alabama enters as the No. 1 East seed for the first time since 1996 and hopes that history repeats itself after capturing the Title that season. UNA has made 20 post-season events, compiling a 15-15 record and claiming five GSC Titles. The Lions have reached the Semi-Finals 11 times and advanced to the Finals six times. Game F—E3 West Georgia (16-11, 7-5) vs. W2 Christian Brothers (19-9, 10-4)—7:30 p.m.
Christian Brothers and West Georgia face off for the third time this season after splitting a pair of games during the regular season. Friday's nightcap will be just third all-time meeting versus the two teams.
CBU seeks to snap a three-game losing skid in the post-season which dates back to 2004. The Buccaneers were ousted in the Opening Round in 2006 and in the Quarter-Finals a year ago. CBU makes its fourth overall appearance, third straight, and have compiled a 1-3 record. CBU is 2-3 versus the East this season and are 7-6 versus the field.
UWG competes in its 17th GSC Tournament, 13th consecutive, while compiling a 13-14 record.
